Investigation of surge in a 1.5-stage transonic axial compressor

In this paper we give insight into characteristics of a 1.5-stage transonic axial compressor rig with focus on surge during stalled operating point. The new at TU Darmstadt is representative for the front stage an industrial gas turbine. Transient throttling maneuvers were conducted multiple points first test campaign TCD 2 (Transonic Compressor 2), providing extensive set unsteady structural and aerodynamic data beyond stability limit. Enhanced analytical methods allow detailed studies including spectral analysis as well determination propagation speed size disturbances. results differ from observations comparable rigs, revealing interesting manifestation stall: wide range limit it shows periodicity. stall emerges vanishes recurrently, causing strong oscillations pressure ratio.
